How Many Lumens Do You Really Need? A B2B Projector Brightness Guide

ANSI lumens vs marketing lumens, how room size and ambient light change the number, and a simple calculator you can use before requesting a quote.

Brightness is the single most overstated — and most misunderstood — number in a projector datasheet. This guide explains how to calculate the ANSI lumens a professional installation actually needs, so you never specify an underpowered unit or overpay for brightness you cannot use.

Always compare ANSI lumens, not 'LED' or 'light-source' lumens

ANSI lumens are measured to a standardised nine-zone test; 'LED lumens' and 'light-source lumens' are measured at the source and routinely overstate screen brightness by 2–3×. If a quote mixes the terms, ask for a single ANSI figure.

Every specification on this site uses ANSI lumens. We recommend you delete any supplier comparison that does not.

The four factors that set your lumen requirement

Screen size: brightness needed scales with screen area, not diagonal. Doubling screen width roughly quadruples the area that must be lit.

Ambient light: a dark home theatre needs far fewer lumens than a glass-walled meeting room or an outdoor evening event.

Screen gain and surface: high-gain and ambient-light-rejecting screens return more light to the audience.

Projection mode: edge-blended or portrait signage setups should be specified with brightness headroom.

A practical starting table

Reference table

EnvironmentTypical screenSuggested ANSI lumens
Dark meeting / control room80–100"3,000–3,500
Lights-on boardroom100–120"4,500–5,000
Lecture hall / worship150–200"7,000–10,000
Evening outdoor / mapping200"+ / building12,000–20,000

How to run the calculation

Start from the screen area in square metres, multiply by your target lux for the environment (a lit meeting room typically needs 200–500 lux on screen), then divide by screen gain. Add 20–30% headroom for economy lamp/laser mode and ageing.

If you send us your screen size, throw distance, ambient-light condition and whether content is mostly data or video, we will return the calculation and two model options — with the ANSI assumptions shown.

Frequently asked questions

Questions on this topic

Is a brighter projector always better?
No — beyond what the room needs, extra lumens mean more cost, heat and fan noise. Specify to the environment.
Can I trust the lumens on a $150 marketplace listing?
Treat non-ANSI figures with caution and request the test standard in writing before a commercial purchase.
If you send us your screen size, throw distance and ambient-light condition, we will return a written brightness calculation with the ANSI assumptions shown — no generic catalogue answers.
